Women’s Health Clinic Overview

Launch Date:

November 2022, initiated due to long waiting times (up to 9 months) for services like IUD/S procedures during and after COVID-19 lockdowns.

Background:

    • During COVID lockdowns in Brent, waiting times for IUD/S insertions reached 6–9 months and 3 months for removals.
    • Despite efforts to clear backlogs, waiting times remain lengthy.
    • National data (2020) showed Brent GPs had a low LARC provision rate of 6.2 per 1000 women, compared to London’s 9.1 and England’s 21.1 per 1000.
  • Purpose: Address the gap in women’s health services at the network level, following GP consultations and approval.

Services Provided

Contraception & Procedures:

    • IUD/IUS (Intrauterine Device/System) insertion and removal.
    • Subdermal implant insertion and removal.

  • The outcomes and approach were well-received by an audience of approximately 100 NHSE members, who recognized it as an effective model for driving impactful change.
  • The project’s success was praised for reducing morbidity and mortality, showcasing an adaptable and scalable approach for improving health protection.

HEALTHCARE Research by K&W Network

  • 9 Years of Experience: K&W Network has been actively involved in clinical research for nearly a decade.
  • Strong Reputation: The network has gained excellent recognition regionally and nationally.
  • Partnerships: Maintains a robust relationship with the London Regional Research Delivery Network (under the National Institute of Health Research), through which all study invitations are generated.

Centralized Delivery Model:

    • Initially, research was conducted at individual practices, but challenges arose due to resource constraints and inconsistent focus.
    • Transitioned to a centralized model for research delivery, enhancing efficiency and scalability.
    • This approach reduced the burden on individual practices while enabling K&W to manage recruitment, oversight, and reporting seamlessly.

Successful Outcomes: The centralized model has allowed the delivery of numerous studies on behalf of 27 practices, bolstering exposure and reputation in the research field.

Notable achievements

Virus Watch – a dual study in the first weeks of COVID designed to use blood tests to monitor the spread within communities and households. It was also coupled the testing of an early PCR Test Kit.

Recruitment = 600 patients in a time limited trial.

Panoramic – designed to test a drug to limit the effects of early onset Covid.

Recruitment = 120 patients.

Discover Me – A test to understand the role of genetics in general health and disease.

Recruitment = 4,000

In 2022 K&W were the biggest recruiter in London and one of the largest nationally in Primary Care.

K&W have recruited nearly 10,000 patients into various research studies since 2016.

The Future:

We have recruited a Clinical Research Nurse and have a dedicated, well-equipped space in which to focus our delivery. Our aim is to build on our success with a team that will enhance our network activity and take K&W Research to the next level.
